Enterprise Networking Journey to Cloud Computing

<Speaker Biography>

John McCool is Senior Vice President and General Manager of Cisco’s Data Center, Switching and Services Group (DSSG). In this role he is responsible for managing the strategy, engineering, and marketing direction of Cisco’s comprehensive family of enterprise Ethernet switching solutions. He is also in charge of the optical product line and of Cisco’s expansion into application networking, virtualization, and integrated security services.

Prior to joining Cisco, McCool led network product development teams at SynOptics, NeXT Computer, and Advanced Micro Devices. He has been active in creating industry standards, playing a key role in the development of dual speed 10/100BASE-T technology as part of the IEEE802.3u standard and making significant contributions to the ANSI X3T9.5 FDDI standard. He holds several patents related to network technologies.

McCool holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Drexel University and a master’s degree in computer engineering from Santa Clara University.

Overview of NIST Smart Grid Activities

In recent years the high cost of energy makes the modernization of the electric power grid a major national priority in many countries with goals to increase energy efficiency and enhance power system reliability. The major focus is to take advantage of advances in electronic industry that enable intelligent electronic devices, smart meters, sensors, actuators, and appliances, the power of information technologies, and the pervasive availability of communications networks. The integration of these capabilities make “smart grid” feasible.

This talk presents the Smart Grid Interoperability Standards Project undertaken by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) of the United States. The NIST efforts focus on the following application areas: power transmission and distribution systems, response to peak demands, electric storage, electric vehicles, and advanced metering infrastructure. In order to expedite development of standards related to smart grid and to ensure their interoperability, NIST has established many Priority Action Plans covering areas supporting metering, enhanced customer interactions with the smart grid, smart grid communications, distribution and transmission, new smart grid technologies, and cyber security for smart grid. The talk will cover these in details.

Dr. David Su is the Chief of the Advanced Network Technologies Division of the Information Technology Laboratory at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), a premier US Government research laboratory on standards and measurement sciences. He has been leading a group of scientists to conduct research in the area of modeling, testing, performance measurement, and standardization of emerging communications protocols, including wireless networks, optical networks, internet, and critical infrastructure protection. Since joining NIST in 1988, Dr. Su has been involved in the development of many communications standards. Currently he is leading the NIST Smart Grid program in the communications and networking area; he is the chair of NIST Priority Action Plans (PAP) on IP, Wireless, and Power Line Communications. Dr. Sureceived his Ph.D in Computer Sciences from the Ohio State University.

To achieve an unpolluted digital society

Nowadays malwares are making a rapid growth in terms of both quantity and quality. There are vast number of malwares produced day by day. Especially since 2008 they have been marking an explosive increase. In 2009, we detected 33 millions of malwares, which almost doubled 18 millions in 2008.
Meanwhile, we have observed a more serious sign in the activities of malware. Channels of their infection have gradually changed; in the 1990s viruses via file media, in the early 2000s worms via emails, and since 2005 Trojans via web pages. It means that malwares have been evolving themselves in response to IT trends.
While web service is getting more interactive according to the concept of Web 2.0, cyber criminals are getting more and more experienced; they exploit various methods for spreading malwares. Besides, cyber criminals are now highly motivated in getting money rather than fun. As a result their cyber attacks are totally indiscriminate. They aim at all type of internet users; personal users, enterprises, and even governments.
Unfortunately, no governments seem to have yet managed to provide any definitive countermeasure against current threats. It is important to realize that cyber attacks have no border; wherever we dwell our life is never without digital threats from somewhere. The purposes of this session are to introduce the way to defend ourselves against such threats and to achieve an unpolluted digital society in cooperation with you audiences.

<Speaker Biography>

Eugene co-founded Kaspersky Lab in 1997, and in 2007 was named CEO of the company. Eugene’s interest in computer viruses dates back to 1989 when he detected the Cascade virus on his computer. From 1991 to 1997 Eugene worked at the KAMI Information Technologies Center where he developed the AVP antivirus project with a group of associates (AVP was renamed Kaspersky Anti-Virus in November 2000).
Eugene has a degree in mathematics from the Russian Institute of Cryptography, Telecommunications and Computer Science. He is the author of numerous articles and reviews on computer virology and a regular speaker at international seminars and conferences.

Cloud Computing, The Next Generation -- Interoperability, Security, Availability, and Power Efficiency

This presentation focuses on the innovations being prepared today to enable Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS ) to take on greater roles in the IT environments of businesses and other organizations, and to address use cases that most organizations would not consider for cloud computing today.

The tow key IaaS trends — the arrival of utility computing services offered by telcos and service providers, i.e. “public clouds”, and the creation of “private clouds” for their own use within the datacenters of individual organizations — are transforming the global technology landscape. However, before IaaS can reach its full potential, several significant challenges will need to be overcome:

  • ・IaaS and other cloud platforms today do not provide interoperability or workload portability, ""resulting in cloud lock-in""
  • ・Cloud platforms are seen as having inferior security to conventional IT deployment models
  • ・Today's IaaS platforms do not easily provide high availability or fault tolerance
  • ・Most cloud platforms do not efficiently optimize power consumption and distribution
  • ・Few cloud platforms enable pooling of compute resources across disparate geographies

This presentation focuses on the solutions that are being developed to meet these challenges, and the new business models these innovations will enable, from the perspective of leading cloud platform technology developers, and that of the Cloud Computing Interoperability Forum, the leading standards incubator in the cloud space.

Dr. Reiner is Chairman and CEO of Enomaly, a pioneer and leader in the cloud computing space, based in Toronto, Canada. Enomaly's Elastic Computing Platform empowers carriers, xSPs and enterprise end-user organizations to deliver infrastructure-on-demand (aka "infrastructure as a service" or IaaS) services to their customers and stakeholders. Enomaly is also the creator and founder of the Cloud Computing Interoperability Forum, the leading standards incubator in the cloud computing space.
Previously, Dr. Reiner was the founder and CEO/CTO of Assurent Secure Technologies, a Canadian-based SaaS company in the IT Security space that was acquired in 2006 by TELUS, a Global 1000 corporation. At Assurent, he led the creation of the world's leading IT security "Data as a Service" offerings, supplying technical data on security threats on a daily basis to 48 of the world's top 50 IT security product companies and many smaller companies, as well as leading financial services, high-tech, law enforcement, and national intelligence organizations around the world.

He has served on the Boards and Advisory Boards of many highly regarded companies in the IT infrastructure, security, and SaaS sectors, such as Fonolo (Canadian ICT vendor), Veracode (US security vendor), Netclarity (US security vendor), Virima (US ifrastructure management), and Stonewall Software (US security vendor). He is often quoted by the press, awith frequent appearances in media such as the New York Times, CBS, NBC, USA Today, etc. and hundreds of technology publications. He hold a Ph.D. and multiple software patents.

Fred Baker, who is a Fellow at Cisco Systems, has worked in data communications since 1978, and in Internet technologies since 1986.
He chaired the IETF 1996-2001, has chaired a number of working groups in that forum. He now represents the IETF to the Smart Grid Interoperability Panel. He has published 43 RFCs, on topics including network management, PPP, IPv4/IPv6 Quality of Service,
IPv6 operations, forensic access, and others. He was also a member of the FCC Technical Advisory Board in 2004, and has contributed to projects such as the US DoD's Global Information Grid.
